A Few Important Announcements

Hello Third Grade Families!
I'd like to start by saying THANK YOU to all of you for bringing your child to Assessment Day today. We had perfect attendance here in Room N and I am very grateful to all of you for helping make that happen! :)

A few announcements:

Kickin' It
As you know, we've been practicing our math facts with the Kickin' It program here in third grade.

I'm sure by now you've seen your child's practice sheet come home in a plastic sleeve for home practice.

The sheets are leveled, and we will have a Kickin' It test each Thursday.

If your child is able to complete all 60 problems in 3 minutes with 91% accuracy, he/she will earn the belt for that level.

All of the students started Addition Facts with a white belt. If they pass Level D, they earn their Yellow Belt. Level H: Orange belt, Level L: Green Belt, Level P: Blue Belt, Level T: Purple Belt, Level X: Brown Belt, Level Z: Black Belt.

We begin to tackle some higher level concepts in third grade math, and knowing math facts with automaticity will help your child focus their mental energy on these larger concepts.

Spelling Tests
Students will take their spelling tests in class each Thursday and a new list will be sent home each Friday.

The May Box
Last week, I introduced "The May Box" and during the Q&A that followed the introduction, our students were incredibly focused and paid close attention to every detail, so I'm sure your child can tell you all about the May box.

Here's the overview: If I catch a student with a toy, they will get one warning and if I see that toy again, it will go in the May box, where it will stay until the end of the school year. However, if you decide you'd like to help your child out, you can come to the classroom before or after school to retrieve an item from the May box.

There are some special circumstances in which toys are allowed at school. For instance, we've told the third graders that they may bring a small toy out to Friday afternoon recess with them. However, the students understand that the toy must remain in their zipped backpack before and after recess.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Our Fourth Teacher and Class Lists
We are very excited that we have found a wonderful teacher to round out our third grade team and bring our class sizes down a bit. Mr. Trujillo is working with HR to get our new teacher started here at Tarver as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience as we work through getting class lists determined. We will notify the community as soon as all of the necessary steps are completed.

Thank you!
